ABOUT US
SOUNDS…
A studio dedicated to the creation, production, and support of artistic projects in the field of sound and hybrid arts. Based in Strasbourg and active for over fifteen years, we conceive, produce, and distribute works designed for public spaces: original compositions, performances, installations, and geolocated sound fiction.
Since our creation, we have produced nearly 400 works, in collaboration with numerous artists, authors, composers, and technicians in France and internationally. This experience is based on recognized artistic and technical expertise, fostered by demanding fieldwork and constant attention to territories, their histories, and their inhabitants.
Geolocated sound fiction is now a strong and distinctive focus of our activity. These signature projects offer immersive listening experiences, available in public spaces, which invite listeners to (re)discover a place through the prism of contemporary sound and literary creation. To support these projects, we have been developing dedicated digital tools in-house since 2018, notably the GOH app, which guarantees the sustainability, accessibility, and quality of the works’ distribution.
As committed members of the industry, we sit on the Executive Committee of the National Network for Hybrid Arts and Digital Cultures (HACNUM), which brings together more than 400 members across France to defend the shared interests of these professionals. We are also a member of the Tôt ou T’art network and actively participate in professional discussions and initiatives on cultural rights, contemporary creation, digital transition, the place of artists, and cultural mediation issues.

OUR APPROACH
Sounds, situations, intersections.
Our name, borrowed from the world of mathematics, immediately indicates the profound nature of our proposal: to be situated, nourished and constructed at the intersection of heterogeneous sets of disciplines, ways of thinking and doing, typologies of actors, spaces and know-how. It is not uncommon for our works to involve artists from different disciplines, technicians, scientists, public and cultural institutions, associations, companies and residents; all in diverse and unexpected spaces. To get comfortable at the intersections, we have chosen to invest two powerful spaces of connection: the acoustic space and the public space.
Sound is an extraordinary tool for anyone wishing to work in the interdisciplinary field, as it is a fundamental ingredient of the various practices we explore or with which we engage in a long-term dialogue, such as music, performance, visual arts, literature, dance, theatre or digital arts. Our sound expertise ranges from music composition to sound design, including spatialisation, geolocation and sound design.
This toolbox, which continues to grow and has become increasingly refined over the years, allows us to exploit the incredible suggestive power of sound, to offer a unique point of hearing, a particular echo of the world. It is therefore quite natural that, along the way, we have found ourselves working more and more often in public spaces, in a direct relationship with reality and with social life.
Borrowing from the landscape, taking into account the context, forms, movements, sounds and uses that surround the creation in situ are unfailing sources of inspiration and the promise of unique works, always giving fresh readings. Indeed, the various situations proposed by the artists, the impermanence of the public space and the unpredictability of the spectator’s choices offer inexhaustible variations within the same proposal and in the moment shape a different space for each person.
Our live works, accessible free of charge, 24/7, are therefore a dynamic confrontation with the context, but also with an audience of passers-by. Thus desacralised, taken out of the temple, they do not impose any prescription of use and do not act as an authority. The passer-by decides whether or not they should be concerned about the proposal being made. But, if they allow themselves to be tempted, they necessarily leave passivity behind and become actors in their experience. They decide how they wish to experience the work and, their brains being thus made, inevitably weave new links with the multiple elements of the context and the unpredictable events that take place around them. This reappropriation of space through the imaginationallows for the construction of unique, ephemeral and, above all, original and renewable situations, which act directly on the perceptions and emotions of each individual.
Creating for a specific context requires knowing it, immersing oneself in its reality, anchoring oneself in it. Each creation is a human adventure that takes place over time and involves diving into the microcosm of the place and becoming, for the duration of a project, the meeting point, the intersection, between numerous inhabitants, stories, trajectories and uses.
Situating our work is a fundamental part of our approach and it is therefore quite natural that we find it in our proposals for the traditional cultural circuit. They are always modelled, adapted and contextualised. Creating a unique work for a specific place at a specific time is a counterpoint to the forced march of our time, a micro-escape from the scalability, globalisation and standardisation of the world and its inhabitants. To propose another narrative in reality, to transform the place, the way of looking at it, is, for the space of a moment, to reappropriate an environment too often confiscated by private economic interests alone. It also means confronting chance and chance encounters. It means addressing everyone. Finally, it means building an infinite playground of crossings and experiments, because there will always be new territories to explore.
